TNS:Another step in the journey towards green steel production was marked at Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) with the inauguration of the Coke Oven Gas Injection System on the Sinter Bed at Sinter Plant-2 on the World Environment Day. The system was formally inaugurated by Dr. K Ramakrishna, ED (Works), on 05.06.2025 amidst presence of Shri P Murugesan ED (Projects), Smt. Sushmita Roy ED (HR), Shri Mohit Malpani ED ( F & A), other senior officials and employees of Quality Control, RMHP, Blast Furnace, SMS, Mills SAIL/RDCIS.
It may be known that Coke Oven gas, a by-product of the coke-making process at DSP, is rich in methane, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, making it an efficient source of thermal energy. Under the decarbonisation initiative, Durgapur Steel Plant in collaboration with SAIL/RDCIS, successfully designed and implemented the system to inject coke oven gas directly onto the sinter bed at Sinter Plant-2. The system is envisaged to achieve a reduction of approximately 3.5 kg of coke breeze per ton of gross sinter (TGS), translating to a net carbon dioxide reduction of around 11 kg of CO2/TGS.
The intervention marks a significant step towards DSP’s commitment to sustainable steelmaking and carbon neutrality. Durgapur Steel Plant is the first steel plant in India to have successfully implemented the trial for use of bamboo-based biochar as a partial replacement for coke breeze in sinter making—an initiative that would lead to substantial reduction in carbon footprint. The current addition of coke oven gas injection further strengthens DSP’s multi-pronged decarbonisation strategy.
